Six months is enough for GATE. It is not enough for six months of unsequenced work, which is what most plans quietly turn into by week three.
The exam is unusually stable — subject weightages move within a narrow band year to year, question patterns are consistent, and marks concentrate in a predictable subset of topics. That stability is what makes planning worthwhile.
Start from the deadline
Work backwards, not forwards. Fix the exam date, subtract a month for full-length mocks and final revision, subtract another three weeks for a complete revision pass, and what remains is your actual learning window. For most people starting six months out, that is closer to four months of new material than six.
Knowing this at the start prevents the specific failure where a student is still learning new topics in the final fortnight.
Sequence by weightage, not by syllabus order
The syllabus document is a list, not a plan. Reorder it.
Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude first. Together they carry a substantial and dependable share of the paper across every branch, the topics are finite, and they are the most improvable part of the exam. Students routinely leave both until the end, treating them as filler. This is backwards: they are the highest return per hour available, and unlike branch subjects they do not decay quickly once learned.
Then your branch’s core subjects. Every discipline has three or four subjects that dominate the paper. Identify them from the last several years’ papers — not from a coaching brochure — and give them the bulk of the learning window.
Then the remainder, honestly ranked. Some topics are worth one or two marks and cost a week. It is entirely rational to leave them, provided that is a decision you made rather than a deadline you hit. Write down what you are choosing to skip.
Build revision in from day one
Everything learned in month one is gone by month five unless it is revisited. Schedule it rather than intending it: a short pass over completed material each week, and a longer consolidation each month. Students who add revision only at the end find they are relearning rather than revising, and there is no time for that.
A single running formula and concept sheet, maintained as you go, is worth more in the last fortnight than any book.
Mocks: the score is the least useful number
Begin full-length mocks earlier than feels comfortable — well before you feel “ready”, because part of what is being trained is three hours of sustained attention under time pressure, and that is a separate skill from knowing the material.
Then analyse properly. Every lost mark falls into one of three categories:
- Did not know it. A syllabus gap. Fix by studying that topic.
- Knew it, got it wrong. Carelessness, misread question, calculation slip. Fix by changing exam-time process, not by studying more.
- Ran out of time. A sequencing problem within the paper. Fix by changing attempt order and by learning when to abandon a question.
These have three different remedies. Students who respond to every poor mock by studying harder are applying one fix to three problems, which is why scores plateau.
Also track negative marking discipline explicitly. Wrong answers carry a penalty, and a student who guesses freely can lose more than an unprepared one.
Decide the destination before the result
M.Tech, PSU recruitment, or neither — decide before you know your score, because the preparation emphasis differs and because the decision is far harder to make well once a specific number is in front of you and everyone has an opinion about it.
A short honest conversation about what you actually want out of the next two years is worth more than another week of problem sets.
